The Los Angeles Humane Society is urging those displaced by the fires to take their pets with them when they receive an evacuation order.
“While it may seem safe to let your pets free when you evacuate, you’re exposing them to numerous dangers,” said Melissa Thorngate, spokesperson for the LAHS.
“They can fall prey to other pets and wild animals, including raccoons, coyotes and other predators.
“We’ve also received reports from firefighters that some pet owners have left their pets locked indoors, giving them no means of escape,” Thorngate said.
Thorngate suggests taking your pets to a friend or relative in a safe area, if you cannot care for them while evacuated.
